How Often To Get A Haircut
Hello everyone! Today I thought I would write about how often to get a haircut. This is a question we receive as stylists a lot in the salon so I thought I would address it on here for you all.
I know we've all heard the saying that cutting your hair helps it to grow. While this is not true per se, cutting your hair does remove split ends, damage and breakage, which in turn helps the hair that is growing look and feel healthier and thicker. Imagine that your hair grows an inch in 2 months, but its also breaking off an inch, you'll never see any progress because its always breaking off at the ends. That is why we need to trim it regularly to notice growth, so the ends stay healthy and strong.
The answer of how often will be different for everyone. Depending on what your particular hair goals and concerns are, how fast your hair grows, and the texture and density of the hair will determine how often you need a trim, so I'm going to go ahead and just get right into it. Everyone will fall somewhere in the categories of as early as every 2 weeks to as long as every 12 weeks, so lets figure out where you fall!
1.) Every 2-4 Weeks
The people who fall into this category are typically going to be those of us who have really short, clean haircuts. This is usually the people who prefer to keep a short buzzed cut and like it to look clean on the back and sides. This would be especially true for people who like a bald fade or bald altogether.
2.) Every 4-6 Weeks
People who would benefit most from coming in every 4-6 weeks are going to be those of us maintaining a shorter cut, like a men's scissor cut or a bob style cut. This would also be beneficial for anyone who has damaged hair from things like color, highlights, perms or relaxers and is working on getting it healthy again.
3.) Every 6-8 Weeks
I think most of my clients fall somewhere into this category. This seems best for people who don't want to spend as much time or money in the salon and don't mind their style growing out a little in-between visits. This is especially true of people who enjoy wearing their hair in longer styles. Coming in every 6-8 weeks is perfect if you would like to maintain longer hair or if you're trying to grow but have minimal damage from things like color or highlights and would like to maintain the health of your hair.
4.) Every 8-12 Weeks
This is for those of us who enjoy having extremely long hair and don't do much to it to cause damage. This is also for those of us who don't use any color or heat on our hair and leave it natural most of the time to keep it healthy. Only those of us with strong and healthy hair can manage to wait this long between cuts without needing a lot cut off.
If that doesn't sound like you, but you're super low maintenance with your hair and don't mind getting a few inches cut off at each appointment, you might like to wait about 3 months or so and just get a big chop every time.
Hair grows at an average rate of about half an inch per month, or about 6 inches a year. For some of us this will be more and for others less. There are a lot of factors at play when it comes to our hairs growth, and this can fluctuate. The best advice I can give is to find a stylist you trust and get into a routine of coming in for regular haircut appointments, then you can both determine what seems to work best for you depending on your hairs history and desired style and goals. Ask your stylist how often they feel you should be coming in.
I would also like to add that some peoples hair is only capable of growing to a certain point due to things out of our control like our growth cycles, hormones, genetics, as well as things like our diets and stress. I believe the more important goal should be our health, which will show in our hair, rather than how long it can grow. Healthy hair is beautiful no matter the length.
Thank you so much for reading. Let me know if you have any questions or anything to add and I look forward to hearing from you!
